Why This Scholarship Exists

Each year, thousands of responsible students are unable to access federal financial aid for one simple reason: their parents will not — or cannot — complete the FAFSA.

Under current financial aid rules, most students under the age of 24 are classified as dependent on their parents. This means the federal government requires parental financial information before the student can qualify for aid.

For many students, this requirement creates an impossible barrier.

Some students are financially independent and supporting themselves, yet their parents refuse to provide financial information. In other cases, students may be estranged from their families or unable to obtain the documentation required to complete the FAFSA.

Without that parental information, students are often denied access to grants, loans, and institutional aid — even if they are paying their own rent, working full time, and pursuing an education on their own.

As a result, many determined students are forced to delay their education or drop out entirely.

The Sovereign Scholars Fund was created to address this gap.

Our scholarship provides temporary support that allows independent students to remain enrolled while they establish the documentation needed to qualify for financial aid on their own.

The Sovereign Scholar Model

The Sovereign Scholars program is designed as a structured pathway to financial independence and long-term educational support.

Rather than providing a one-time scholarship with no follow-up, the program guides students through the steps necessary to qualify for financial aid independently.

Sovereign Scholars receive scholarship support for up to two academic semesters while they work toward establishing their own financial record.

During this period, the program assists students with:

• securing employment with partner businesses near their college
• learning how financial independence is evaluated by financial aid offices
• filing their first tax return
• preparing to reapply for financial aid the following academic year

Once students can submit their own tax return to the financial aid office, they often become eligible to apply for federal financial aid as independent students.

This process allows students to transition from temporary scholarship support to long-term financial aid eligibility.

The Sovereign Scholars Fund exists to help students successfully navigate this transition.

The Sovereign Scholar Commitment

Sovereign Scholars are expected to contribute to their communities while they receive program support.

Each scholar volunteers five hours per week tutoring children who do not qualify for School Choice programs.

This tutoring service helps provide academic support to students who may not have access to other educational resources.

Through this commitment, Sovereign Scholars help expand opportunity for younger students while continuing their own educational journey.

Creating a Cycle of Opportunity

The Sovereign Scholars Fund is built on a simple principle: students who receive support today can help strengthen educational opportunity for others tomorrow.

By supporting independent students and encouraging community service, the program creates a cycle of opportunity that benefits both scholars and the communities they serve.
