For Students
Scholarship Support for Independent Students
The Sovereign Scholars Fund supports students who are pursuing higher education but are unable to qualify for financial aid because they cannot complete the FAFSA with parental financial information.
Many students support themselves financially yet remain ineligible for aid due to federal dependency rules. The Sovereign Scholars program helps bridge this gap by providing temporary scholarship support and structured guidance while students work toward establishing financial independence.
The program is designed to help students remain enrolled in school while building the financial documentation needed to qualify for federal financial aid independently.
Who Should Apply
Students who may benefit from the Sovereign Scholars program include those who:
• Support themselves financially
• Live independently from their parents
• Cannot obtain parental financial information for FAFSA completion
• Are enrolled in or accepted to a college, university, or training program
• Are committed to continuing their education
Students who are already working or are willing to work while attending school are especially encouraged to apply.
What the Program Provides
Sovereign Scholars may receive support for up to two academic semesters while they work toward establishing financial independence.
During this time, the program assists students with:
• employment opportunities through partner businesses near their college
• understanding financial independence requirements
• filing their first tax return
• preparing to reapply for financial aid the following academic year
This support allows students to remain in school while building the documentation necessary to qualify for federal financial aid.
Scholar Responsibilities
Students selected as Sovereign Scholars commit to both academic progress and community service.
Program expectations include:
Visiting three businesses a month for the duration of the program to establish New Sponsors and Employer Partners.
• maintaining consistent employment during the program
• working toward filing a personal tax return
• remaining enrolled in school
• volunteering five hours per week tutoring children who do not qualify for School Choice programs
This community service requirement ensures that Sovereign Scholars help expand educational opportunity for younger students facing their own barriers.
